ABOUT THIS PROJECT

Located at the heart of the University of Cambridge’s West campus, the West Hub has been designed to promote a dynamic and integrated research environment, connected to people from across the University.

Designed by acclaimed architectural practice Jestico + Whiles, the West Hub is a low energy building that has achieved Excellent BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) certification.

It is under these high environmental requirements, in addition to the fire requirements for the materials that Frapont has manufactured and installed the fixed carpentry, with MDF elements finished in American oak veneer for the exterior faces and orange lacquer for the interiors and detail elements. Frapont’s work can be seen in the libraries, benches, shelving, table, drawer units and grandstands of the atrium. Frapont has also manufactured and installed suspended ceilings also finished in oak veneer and other false ceilings with acoustic absorption of linear typology with fireproof pine slats (FSC).

The furnishing of the common areas and restaurants, including ceramic-finished counters, bar furniture with Solid Surface tops, metal shelving, upholstered banquettes and a Coffee station clad in wood slats and sheet metal cladding, once again demonstrates Frapont’s capabilities in managing a complete interior design project, including a variety of materials in addition to wood.

The West Hub marked the first stage of the Cavendish project, where Frapont is continuing its collaboration with Bouygues UK for further work in other areas of the University complex.
